My complex personal relationship to the east and west has been the subject matter of my work for a few years now. My two identities: Indian and American are constantly interwoven into my everyday life. There is a certain self-consciousness and weariness in my everyday decisions that is a result of treading unknown waters and ambiguous boundaries for too long. Sometimes, they seem to blend seamlessly and sometimes, they repel each other like the opposite poles of a magnet. I try to portray this shifting state of mind where opposites occasionally result in harmony and quite often, in discord. My work is about identity and assimilation, losses and gains, memories and fresh experiences. I aimed to then create a visual experience that is distinctive by using ornament and color blending the two different cultural aesthetics.
My challenge has been - expressing such a complex abstract idea in visual media.
